We play 8v8 against all boys teams. This team has been playing at this level for about 3 weeks. They are competing against teams which have been together for 3 years. With the help of your Premium soccer drills we managed to go 0-3-1 at our first tournament. Our parents thought this was wonderful. By the next weekend we were able to go 2-2. This weekend we are hoping to do even better. Our girls receive more compliments than any of our other players. Thanks so much for the insight. Coach Warren
Hi Coach Warren, Thanks for writing. I think your success with a new co-ed team against all boys teams that have played together for years is amazing and am glad the Premium soccer drills have helped your team. Below are some Premium soccer drills that I think will really help your team - you might already be using them: 1. Dribble Across a Square Soccer Drill will teach composure in traffic, peripheral vision, instinctive reactions and to dribble with head up. Make the square larger (15 steps wide) to teach recognition of Open Space and acceleration into Open Space, which teaches how to Breakaway. I recommend playing this at the start of every practice as a warm-up. If you play this for a season or 2 you will see HUGE improvement. Coaches are starting to post videos on You Tube of young players who have practiced with Dribble across a Square dribbling through entire teams. They look like young George Best's. 2. Dribble Around Cone & Pass Relay Race Soccer Drill to teach Aggressive Receiving and One-Touch play. I recommend playing this a lot - it will make a huge difference in speed of play and in aggressive play to retain the ball. 3. Shoulder Tackle & Strength on the Ball - Teaches a legal Shoulder Tackle and avoid getting pushed off the ball. This is IMPORTANT because it will get players used to contact. Some coaches misunderstand and think this games is just about teaching a Shoulder Tackle the more important part is that it teaches players to get used to contact so they arent pushed around. By the way, a "Shoulder Tackle" isnt really a "tackle" it is just a legal way to use the shoulder to push a player who has the ball. This is a Premium game that is available to Newsletter Subscribers by using this link or the link below to "29 Pages of Free Soccer Coaching Tips" http://www.soccerhelp.com/soccer_coaching_tips_drill_links.shtml "This Game made an immediate improvement on my boys on how to fight for a ball." Coach Chuck, U-10 Boys "We did this first thing after warm-ups until I was satisfied the girls weren't going to be afraid of contact." Coach Corey, U-12 Girls "The other team was bigger and trying to play very aggressively against us, but we have been playing the Strength on the Ball game since the beginning of the season, and, although they really tried, the other team could not push my boys around." Coach Stephanie, U10 Boys "I LOVE the "Shoulder Tackle & Strength on the Ball" drill - it has HUGE benefits. It paid off this past weekend when we played a team from another league. Their girls were very aggressive until we got on their shoulders and then they generally went to pieces and we took away the ball." Coach Tony, U16G, Premium Member 4. Win the 50/50 Ball or Be the First Defender 1v1 Attacking and Defending is a Premium soccer drill that makes a big difference. As the name says, if a player cant win a 50/50 ball, he or she MUST be the First Defender and slow down the attack so teammates have time to recover to defensive positions. If the First Defender can slow the attack for 10 seconds it can prevent breakaways. Corey, a U-12 coach, said: "The girls loved this game. This was one of their two favorites (the other is Dribble Around Cone & Pass Relay Race) and I found this game brought out their competitive side more than any other". "You know you are doing the right thing when you say practice is over after 90 minutes in 93 degree heat and 7 year old girls still want to play the "Win the 50/50 Ball or be the First Defender 1v1 Attacking and Defending" soccer practice game." Coach Troy, Premium Member, MD USA Tony, a U-14 Select coach, said: "My kids loved it!" "3 weeks of playing the "Win the 50/50 Ball" practice game has made a tremendous difference for my sweeper. He just annoys the other team back there with his patience and always blocking the direct line to the goal." Coach Brian, U9 Travel, Premium Member 5. Try the Bunching Up, Spread Out to Attack, Create Space Premium soccer drill. It teaches players not to Bunch Up and to Spread Out to Attack so they Create Width and Space, and starts to teach Movement Off the Ball and Team Attacking, It is for Ages 7-12 Please let me know how your team does.
