Hi SoccerHelp,

I will be taking over teaching at boys u13 travel soccer team in the fall and I have never coached at this level and age before. I am hoping to find educational training materials that will help me coach our team to stop with the high skill players "hotdogging" full field play and teach the boys the art of controlled passing and aggressive play. I do have a fairly strong understanding of the game but my coaching experience is extensively with younger boys and smaller fields. I am also interested in soccer conditioning drills as well as skill drills. thank you

Joseph

Hi Joseph,

I recommend 7 things:

  1. Subscribe to SoccerHelp Premium and play the soccer drills that are practice games there like Dribble Across A Square Game (Improved) (use as a warm-up to start every practice), Dribble Around Cone & Pass Relay Race, Win the 50/50 Ball or Be the First Defender 1v1 Attacking and Defending Game and Shoulder Tackle & Strength on the Ball Game - these produce fast results and make a big difference - read the Testimonials on the Drills. There are over 1,500 pages on Premium and 300 pages about Formations and Styles of Play.

Dribble Across a Square and Dribble Around Cone & Pass Relay are good for soccer conditioning drills. ALSO, try 2 Team Keepaway for soccer conditioning.

  2. Watch the video clips from Anson Dorrance DVD www.soccerhelp.com/Soccer_Video_Clips_Anson_Dorrance_Soccer_Clinic_DVD.shtml

  3. Read the Detailed Review of "Coaching Soccer Set Plays" www.soccerhelp.com/shshop/product_reviews_info.php/products_id/247/reviews_id/20

  4. If your son plays, watch the video clips from SoccerHelp Foot Skills Training Program - it really works and is great soccer conditioning. If a player will practice on their own, this is the best, most practical way - you do it inside in front of a TV so heat, cold or rain don't matter. www.soccerhelp.com/Soccer_Video_Clips_Soccerhelp_Soccer_Moves_DVD.shtml

  5. Teach Soccer Coaching Rule No. 3 - it is easy and makes a big difference in controlling the flow of the game.

  6. To motivate Team Play, Bravery, Hustle and Listening to the Coach read 4-Step Plan for Successfully Motivating Soccer Players. ALSO, on Premium read about the Brazilian Soccer Goal Celebration. You want to develop a motivational program to motivate your players to DO WHAT YOU WANT. SO, for example, you do NOT want to give patches as rewards for goals scored or for the "MVP" because that will encourage selfish play and not team play. HOWEVER, you can give patches for assists and for defensive play in any part of the field by any player (even Forwards - you want a TOTAL defensive effort all over the field. Look at the Sample Motivational Programs at How Soccer Coaches Use Our Patches to Motivate and Reward Achievements and Behavior, especially Patch Reward System for Soccer that can be adapted for any Sports that encourages Team Attacking, Team Defending, Bravery, Hustle, Leadership, Teamwork, Listening to the Coach and Following Instructions, and teaches that all players have defensive responsibilities. Obviously, Bravery, Hustle and Listening to the Coach are key and you can beat more skilled teams if your players are brave, play their positions and hustle.
  7. There are 30 articles and over 50 pages on Premium about Soccer Attacking at www.soccerhelp.com/premium/Attacking_Index.shtml. There are 35 Soccer Attacking Tips at www.soccerhelp.com/premium/Scoring_More_Goals.shtml#attacking_tips

Good luck!!!

Please let me know what helps you the most - that is how I learn
